Calhoun
is located in Gordon County in northwestern Georgia. As of 2005, the population was 13,570. The land where the city of Calhoun now sits was once part of the Cherokee Nation (including New Echota, capital of the Cherokee Nation) until they were forced to leave in 1835. The town that was settled there was first called Dawsonville, but in 1850 the name was changed to Calhoun, in honor of U.S. Senator John C. Calhoun. Today, the community offers a safe, quiet small-town atmosphere that is conveniently located just off Interstate 75. Atlanta is an easy one hour drive south and Calhoun is only 45-minutes south of Chattanooga, Tennessee. Some of the attractions in the town include the Roland Hayes Museum, the Harris Arts Center, and the Gordon County Historical Society, which contains one of the largest private doll collections in all of Georgia. Calhoun is also centrally located near many state historical sites, such as the Resaca Civil War Battlefield and New Echota Museum, which showcases the events that led to the "Trail of Tears." Calhoun has been named a "National Main Street City," and has many several special events during the year. A free Summer Concert Series is held in the BB&T City Park, festivals are held in the spring and fall, and the city is host to Fourth of July Fireworks and a Christmas Parade.

Northern Georgia, like most of the state, is classified as having a humid subtropical climate. The Chattahoochee River divides the state into separate climatic regions with the mountains to the north being colder than the rest of Georgia. The average temperature for northern Georgia in winter is 39 degrees F. There is little snowfall in the state, although northern and central Georgia receives more than other areas. Many mid-summer days exceed 90 degrees F., with humidity. Rainfall is widespread and September and October are the driest months. Severe weather in the form of tornadoes and cyclones are possible in northern Georgia, but not common.
