LaFayette
is a small city located in Walker County in the northwest corner of Georgia. The population was 6,702 as of the 2000 census. LaFayette is considered part of the Chattanooga, Tennessee metropolitan area. The community is called the "Queen City of the Highlands," nestled in the mountains of northwest Georgia, about two hours from Atlanta and only 30 miles from Chattanooga. It's a city rich in history, beginning with the Cherokee Indians who first occupied the land before being forced to leave on the Tail of Tears. A monument marks the site of Fort Cumming in LaFayette, which was one of the camps of the Cherokees. Attractions in LaFayette include Chattooga Academy, built in 1836, it is one of Georgia's oldest remaining brick school buildings. The building was used as General Braxton Bragg's headquarters in September 1863. It is said that he sat under an oak tree in front of the school as he planned his attack on Union forces at Chickamauga. Marsh House, an antebellum plantation, is located next to Chattooga Academy. LaFayette is home to Queen City Lake, a reservoir that is open for fishing, boating and other activities. LaFayette Golf Course is situated on the south side of the city and is a par 72 course that features bent grass greens and hybrid Bermuda grass fairways. Other nearby attractions include Rock City Gardens, Pigeon Mountain and Chattahoochee National Forest.

The northwestern corner of Georgia has a mountainous climate with mild to warm summers and cold winters. The warmest month of the year is July, but summer temperatures tend to be in the 70s and 80s. The coldest month of the year is January with an average temperature of 29.9 degrees F. Temperature variations between night and day are moderate in both winter and summer, with an average difference of 20 degrees. F. Annual precipitation in northwestern Georgia is 48.93 inches. Rainfall is fairly evenly distributed throughout the year, with March being the wettest month. Snowfall occurs most winters in the mountains, and increases in frequency and amounts the farther north you go in Georgia.
