Carters-Lake
is one of the "Great Lakes of Georgia," located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It's situated in both Gilmer and Murray County in the northern part of the state. Carters Lake is one of the biggest lakes in the state of Georgia, and the deepest of the Great Lakes. It's fed by the Coosawattee River and was completed in 1977. The lake is used as a watershed to control flooding and also to generate power. Carters Lake has a surface area of more than 3,200 acres with more than 60 miles of shoreline. Although one of the largest lakes in the state, Carters Lake is actually one of the smallest of the Great Lakes, but is quite deep at 450 feet, which makes it a great fishing lake. There are several parks located around the beautiful, rugged shoreline for picnicking and camping. Carters Lake also offers a wide variety of other outdoor activities, such as boating, water-skiing, mountain biking, hiking, hunting, and birdwatching. There are no homes or private docks around the lake, which makes it a quiet, peaceful respite for visitors. The area is also filled with a wide variety of flora and fauna and the landscape varies from gently rolling hills to stunning mountain vistas. Be sure and bring your camera - you'll have lots of opportunities for picture taking at Carters Lake.

Northern Georgia, like most of the state, is classified as having a humid subtropical climate. The Chattahoochee River divides the state into separate climatic regions with the mountains to the north being colder than the rest of Georgia. The average temperature for northern Georgia in winter is 39 degrees F. There is little snowfall in the state, although northern and central Georgia receives more than other areas. Many mid-summer days exceed 90 degrees F., with humidity. Rainfall is widespread and September and October are the driest months. Severe weather in the form of tornadoes and cyclones are possible in northern Georgia, but not common.
