Allatoona-Lake
,more commonly called Lake Allatoona, is located northeast of Atlanta in southwestern Cherokee County. A portion of the lake is situated in Bartow County and a small part in Cobb County, near the town of Acworth. Most of the north end of the lake remains undeveloped, due to its isolated location. Red Top Mountain State Park is located on the shores of the lake, on the peninsula between the Allatoona and Etowah arms of the lake. Only 30 miles from Atlanta, Lake Allatoona is one of the most popular recreational lakes in Georgia, with nearly seven million visitors each year. It's situated along the Etowah River, which is a tributary of Coosa River, and several marinas and boat ramps are located around the lake. Activities at Lake Allatoona include swimming, fishing, boating, hunting and camping. The serene surroundings make it a perfect spot for picnicking. Allatoona Lake also offers 14 Corps of Engineers day use parks for public use. These parks have swimming beaches, picnic shelters, ball fields, fishing jetties, horseshoe pits and volleyball areas. The visitor center at Lake Allatoona features exhibits of the history of the area, including Indian history, gold mining and iron making, from the Civil War up to the present day.

North-central/northwestern Georgia has a relatively mild, southern climate conducive to year round outdoor recreation. The region enjoys warm summers, bright, sunny fall days and mild winters. In spring, northwestern Georgia is alive with color, from azaleas to roses, and magnificent dogwood trees dot the landscape. It seldom snows in this area because wintertime temperatures are mild with daily highs in the mid-40s and 50s. Freezing ran is sometimes a problem. Summers are hot and humid, but not extreme with pleasant highs averaging in the mid-80s. Thunderstorms are a possibility in the summertime.
