Jasper
is a small village located in Pickens County in north-central Georgia. It's approximately 50 miles north of Atlanta. As of the 2000 census, the population was 2,167 residents. Jasper serves as the county seat for Pickens County. The town is named after General Andrew Pickens, an American Revolutionary War hero. Jasper is named "the First Mountain City," and has several local attractions, including Tate House, a historic property built in the 1920s by local marble baron Sam Tate. It was designed in the Neo-Classical style and built of pink and white marble supplied by the Georgia Marble Company. For this reason, it's sometimes called "The Pink Palace." Tate House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is privately owned, but open for tours on certain days. Tate House is two stories, rectangular-shaped, with a hipped roof, and a front portico. The interior features mural wallpaper and parquet marble floors. Jasper is also host to Main Street Mania, a musical event in October that features local talent, great food and good family fun. Jasper offers several good restaurants, shopping, and budget conscious inns and motels for visitors.

North-Central Georgia, like most of the state, is classified as having a humid subtropical climate. The Chattahoochee River divides the state into separate climatic regions with the mountains to the north being colder than the rest of Georgia. The average temperature for north-central Georgia in winter is 39 degrees F. There is little snowfall in the state, although northern and central Georgia receives more than other areas. Many summer days exceed 90 degrees F., with humidity. Rainfall is widespread and September and October are the driest months. Severe weather in the form of tornadoes and cyclones are possible, but not common.
