Hiawassee
is small town in Towns County, Georgia, which is in the northern part of the state near the North Carolina border. The population of the town is approximately 800. The name "Hiawassee" is a Cherokee word meaning "meadow." The little town of Hiawassee is home to several attractions. The Fred Hamilton Rhododendron Garden is a botanical garden located in the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds. The garden was originally planted in 1982 by Fred Hamilton, a local plant breeder who donated his personal garden by moving approximately 1,000 rhododendrons to the present site. Today the garden contains more than 3,000 rhododendrons, which is one of the largest collections in the country. The plants bloom from early April to late May. Hiawassee is also near Chatuge Lake, which straddles the Georgia-North Carolina border. The lake was named for an 18th-century Cherokee village that once stood near the dam site. Fishing is popular at Chatuge Lake, both in the reservoir and in the Hiwassee River below the dam. A concrete weir is below the dam, and provides a steady flow of water in the riverbed. This increases oxygen levels for fish and other aquatic animals. Wade fishing for trout is popular at Chatuge Lake because fish are attracted to the weir, where food is abundant.

The Mountains, due to their mild summer temperatures, have always been a welcome escape from the heat at the lower elevations. Midsummer afternoon temperatures average only around 80 degrees at elevations of 3,000 feet or higher. Nights are crisp and cool, but seldom too cold for outdoor activities or camping. In winter, snowfall is likely most years, but ski resorts use snowmaking equipment to ensure a reliable supply. Large amounts of snow and extreme low temperatures are rare except at the highest peaks. Rainfall is common in spring and summer. In spring, storm systems that bring cold weather southward reach North Carolina less often and less forcefully than in other parts of the country. Occasional invasions of cool dry air from the north continue during the summer, but are of short duration. Fall has warm days and cool nights and is the driest period.
