Young-Harris
is a small town located in northeast Georgia in Towns County. As of the 2000 census, the population was 604 residents. The town is home to Young Harris College, from which it got its' name. The college is affiliated with the United Methodist Church, but has students from all different backgrounds. Nestled among the beautiful Appalachian Mountains, Young Harris offers a wide variety of attractions, and an ideal location near the Chattahoochee, Cherokee and Nantahala National Forests. One of the most popular draws is Chatuge Lake. The lake is situated in the northern part of Towns County, with part of it reaching into North Carolina. It has a shoreline of 132 miles and provides swimming, boating, fishing, water-skiing, tubing, picnicking around the lake, hiking and more. Equipment rentals are also available at Lake Chatuge. White water rafting is another popular activity in the Young Harris/Towns County region. Several rivers and rafting outfitters offer everything you'll need - no matter what your skill level. Young Harris is a small town, but has everything you need, such as great family-owned restaurants, cafes and charming bistros, shopping, art galleries, theatre and cinemas. A variety of accommodations are available in cabin rentals, motels and mountain resorts. Also, some of the best golf in Georgia can be found in northeast Georgia. Young Harris is approximately a two-hour drive from both Atlanta and Chattanooga.

The Mountains, due to their mild summer temperatures, have always been a welcome escape from the heat at the lower elevations. Midsummer afternoon temperatures average only around 80 degrees at elevations of 3,000 feet or higher. Nights are crisp and cool, but seldom too cold for outdoor activities or camping. In winter, snowfall is likely most years, but ski resorts use snowmaking equipment to ensure a reliable supply. Large amounts of snow and extreme low temperatures are rare except at the highest peaks. Rainfall is common in spring and summer. In spring, storm systems that bring cold weather southward reach North Carolina less often and less forcefully than in other parts of the country. Occasional invasions of cool dry air from the north continue during the summer, but are of short duration. Fall has warm days and cool nights and is the driest period.
