Clayton
is a small city located in Rabun County in the northeast corner of Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the population was 2,019. Clayton sits in the stunning Blue Ridge Mountains, which are especially popular during the fall when leaves turn scarlet, orange and yellow. Anytime of the year is a good time to visit Clayton, however. It's historic beginnings begins in 1775 when explorer and naturalist William Bartram visiting the area. It was then called "Dividings" because it sat at the intersection of three important Cherokee trails. Two of the Cherokee trails eventually became main roads for Clayton, US 441 and US 76. Clayton was incorporated as a town in December 1823. Part of the Disney film, "Old Yeller" was filmed here in 1957. Attractions near Clayton include The Foxfire Museum, where students of Rabun County recorded, photographed and documented the residents of Southern Appalachia in a series of books. The Foxfire books looked deeply into the families of the communities and their heritage, folklore and memories of an era long past. For outdoor recreation, Rabun County is home to Black Rock Mountain State Park and Moccasin Creek State Park. Tallulah Gorge State Park is also near Clayton, and is home to one of the most spectacular gorges in the eastern U.S. Due to the rugged terrain and fragile plant and animal life, visitors must obtain a free permit from the interpretive center before hiking into Tallulah Gorge.

Clayton Weather & Climate

The westernnmost mountain region of North Carolina is the smallest of the three main divisions of the state; the Coastal Plain, the Piedmont and the Mountains. However, its' range of elevation is the greatest; it stretches upward from around 1,500 feet along the eastern boundary to 6,684 feet at the summit of Mt. Mitchell. The climate is definitely effected by elevation. Overall, spring is unpredictable, summer is warm with moderate humidity, autumn is crisp and cool and winters are cold - but moderate. More extreme winter conditions can be expected at the mountain peaks. Showers and thunderstorms are common in spring and summer. Expect temperatures to be 10 to 20 degrees cooler on the mountaintops than in the lower elevations. Although snow in winter is likely, most ski resorts rely on snowmaking equipment because daytime highs can often hover in the 40-degree range.
