Sky-Valley
is a small town, nestled in a mountain valley on the northwest slopes of Rabun Bald, Georgia. Rabun Bald is located in the northeast corner of the state, and is Georgia's second highest peak. The town of Sky Valley had a population of 250 as of the 2000 census. However, the area is home to the Sky Valley Resort, which offers golf, hiking, tennis and swimming. It used to be a ski resort, but the slopes were closed in 2004. The only highway through the area is the Dillard/Highlands Road (or Georgia State Route 246) between Dillard, Georgia and Highlands, NC. The northern city limit of Sky Valley is the North Carolina state line, and also where the highway zigazgs and crosses into and out of the town two times! Today, Sky Valley consists of condominiums and private homes, many of which are offered as short or long-term vacation rentals. Sky Valley has beautiful mountain views, waterfalls and lush forests, which makes it popular as a weekend getaway, or longer vacation destination. The Sky Valley region is approximately two hours from Atlanta, Asheville, Knoxville, and Chattanooga.

Sky Valley Weather & Climate

The westernnmost mountain region of North Carolina is the smallest of the three main divisions of the state; the Coastal Plain, the Piedmont and the Mountains. However, its' range of elevation is the greatest; it stretches upward from around 1,500 feet along the eastern boundary to 6,684 feet at the summit of Mt. Mitchell. The climate is definitely effected by elevation. Overall, spring is unpredictable, summer is warm with moderate humidity, autumn is crisp and cool and winters are cold - but moderate. More extreme winter conditions can be expected at the mountain peaks. Showers and thunderstorms are common in spring and summer. Expect temperatures to be 10 to 20 degrees cooler on the mountaintops than in the lower elevations. Although snow in winter is likely, most ski resorts rely on snowmaking equipment because daytime highs can often hover in the 40-degree range.
