Amicalola-Falls is an 829-acre state park located in north-central Georgia near the town of Dawsonville. The name "Amicalola" is from the Cherokee language and means "tumbling waters." The park is home to Amicalola Falls, the highest waterfalls in Georgia at 729 feet. It's considered one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Georgia. Amicalola Falls State Park has four groups of hiking trails within it, including an eight-mile trail that winds past the falls and leads to Springer Mountain. Amicalola Falls is also known for being the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail, which begins in the park. The state park also owns a nearby facility called the Len Foote Hike Inn, a backcountry, eco-friendly inn that is one mile from the Appalachian Trail and 4.4 miles from Springer Mountain. The inn is operated by a non-profit organization known as the Appalachian Educational Recreational Services, Inc. or AERS. The nearby town of Dawsonville offers visitors shopping and restaurants in a relaxed, peaceful atmosphere. The town is home to several annual festivals, including Spring Fling in May, a 2-day event for local artists and crafts people, and the Mountain Moonshine Festival in October, which celebrates Dawson County's history during the prohibition era.
