Acworth
is a small town located in Cobb County in the foothills of the North Georgia Mountains. The population is approximately 17,000. Nicknamed "The Lake City," Acworth lies along the banks of Lake Acworth, Lake Allatoona and Etowah River. During the American Civil War, the city was burned nearly to the ground, except for a few homes. Today, Acworth relies heavily on tourism for its economy. The town is near Lake Allatoona, which is one of the most popular recreational lakes in northern Georgia. Red Top Mountain State Park is located on the shores of the lake, which receives nearly seven million visitors each year. Lake Allatoona is situated along the Etowah River, which is a tributary of Coosa River, and several marinas and boat ramps are located around the lake. Activities at Lake Allatoona include swimming, fishing, boating, hunting and camping. The serene surroundings make it a perfect spot for picnicking. Fourteen Corps of Engineers day use parks are also available in the area for public use. These parks have swimming beaches, picnic shelters, ball fields, fishing jetties, horseshoe pits and volleyball areas. The visitor center at Lake Allatoona features exhibits of the history of the area, including Indian history, gold mining and iron making, from the Civil War up to the present day.

North Central Georgia's weather. is impacted by the mountains. Most of the state is humid subtropical, although the weather in winter is colder and snowier in the northern regions. However, even in the mountains, snowfall is moderate compared to other parts of the United States. Freezing rain and ice is more of a problem. Most summer days in north-central Georgia are hot and humid. The entire state receives moderate to heavy rainfall. Autumn's are sunny and cool. September and October are the driest months. The first freeze of the year typically occurs in November, except in the northern mountains, where it occurs in October.
