Cumming
is a town of approximately 5,000, located in north-central Georgia's Forsyth County. These lands where the town of Cumming stands today were originally inhabited by the Cherokee tribes. The Cherokee and white settlers coexisted until the discovery of gold in Georgia in 1828. This changed things drastically as more settlers moved in and pushed for the removal of the Cherokee. Finally, in 1825, the Treaty of New Echota was signed, stating that the Cherokee Nation must move to the Indian Territory. The result was the Trail of Tears. The Cherokee Territory was then formed into Cherokee County in 1831, and in 1832, the county split into several counties, including Forsyth County. With the completion of Georgia Highway 500, the town of Cumming turned into a mainly "bedroom community" for nearby Atlanta. In 1956, Buford Dam was built along the Chattahoochee River, which formed the reservoir called Lake Lanier. The lake provides lots of outdoor recreation for tourists and is especially popular with boaters. The 38,000-acre reservoir is lined by a lush forest, making it a gorgeous spot for a picnic, hiking, canoeing and other water sports. The lake attracts over 7 million visitors each year, and is home to the Lake Lanier Islands Waterpark. In the 1996 Summer Olympics, the rowing and sprint canoeing events were held here, and Lake Lanier also hosted the Canoe Sprint World Championships in 2003.

Northeast Georgia climate is greatly influenced by the Appalachian Mountains, and differs significantly from the rest of the state. This area has four distinct seasons. Summers are warm and typically has lengthy spells of hot, humid weather. Spring and fall are mild with much variability from day to day. The first freeze is usually in October in the mountains. Winter temperatures average in the 40s during the day and 20s at night. Snow is light, with about 4 to 6 inches each year. Annual average rainfall in this region is over 60 inches. The driest months are September and October. The wettest month is March. Thunderstorms are common in spring and summer.
