Tybee-Island
is a barrier island, and also the name of a town on the island, located off the southeastern coast of Georgia. The island is the easternmost point in the state of Georgia. The population of the entire island was 3,713 in 2000, with 3,392 of those living within the town of Tybee Island. Situated just 18 miles from the city of Savannah, Tybee Island has become a popular getaway for residents across the state. It boasts a picture-perfect beach that's lined with sea-oat covered sand dunes. Activities include swimming, sunbathing, fishing, shelling and walking the wide, three-mile long, white sand beach. Attractions on the island include the often-photographed Tybee Island Lighthouse. The original was built in 1736 and stood 90 feet tall, making it the highest structure in America at the time. The lighthouse has been replaced several times, with the current one dating to 1773. It stands on a five-acre site that also features several historic support buildings. Tybee Island offers restaurants, hotels and motels, quaint inns and cottages in a laid-back, friendly atmosphere. Since 1987, the island has been host of an annual Beach Bum Parade that takes place in May. The Tybee Island Pier & Pavilion is a great place for fishing, and also the site of various special events and musical performances. The pier also offers public restrooms, picnic tables and a snack bar.

Southeast Georgia's barrier islands have a moderate climate and generally pleasant weather year round. Summers are usually long and warm with humidity, but cool ocean breezes moderate the heat. Fall is marked by clear, sunny days and warm temperatures with relatively low humidity. Winters tend to be brief and mild, with most daytime highs suitable for outdoor activities. Spring comes early to the islands, usually in February. Rain and thunderstorms are possible anytime of the year, but most precipitation occurs June through October.
