Richmond-Hill is located in Bryan County in southeast Georgia. The population as of the 2000 census was 6,959. The city, which was originally called "Ways Station," is about 20 miles from Savannah on U.S. 17 and I-95. Automobile industrialist, Henry Ford, spent his winters in the town, and also used it has a philanthropic social experiment by building the complex known as Ford Farms along the Ogeechee River in the 1930s. Ford had quite an impact on the town by constructing several public buildings, such as a kindergarten that is now the Richmond Hill Historical Society Museum. The Ford Plantation, where Ford lived with his family, is now a luxury resort, with cottages, a clubhouse, tennis courts, and a golf course. When the town's leaders suggested that the town be renamed Ford, Mr. Ford declined and instead renamed it Richmond Hill after the site of Fords home on the banks of the Ogeechee River. Today, Richmond Hill is one of the fastest growing communities in the United States. It is home to J. F. Gregory City Park, which offers hiking and biking trails, and picnicking. Richmond Hill is also host to the annual Great Ogeechee Seafood Festival, a family event since 1999.

Richmond Hill Weather & Climate

Southeast Georgia has a humid subtropical climate. Summers are hot, except for the coastal areas, which are moderated by ocean breezes. Winters are mild and short (December-January) with daytime highs in the 50s inland, to 60s and 70s along the coast and extreme south. Snow is a very rare occurrence in southeast Georgia. Spring comes early and is mild. Autumn has very pleasant temperatures, but is hurricane season. Even inland areas in southeast Georgia are vulnerable to tropical storms and hurricanes, but plenty of warning is generally given for these storms. Frequent daytime thunderstorms are possible in spring and summer.
