Savannah
is one of Georgia's most well-known and visited cities. It's located on the southeastern coast of the state in Chatham County. As of 2009, the estimated population was 134,700 residents. Visitors to Savannah are drawn to the city's historic buildings and architecture. They often remark on the cleanliness of the city, the white, gleaming buildings, fountains and gardens, cobblestone streets and moss-draped trees. Established in 1733, Savannah was the first state capital of Georgia, and is home to many historic places, such as the First African Baptist Church, and the oldest standing antebellum railway facility in the country. The stunning Savannah Historic District is one of the largest National Historic Landmark Districts in the United States. It includes the Victorian Historic District and 22 park-like squares. Walking tours are available of the district, and Christmastime is an especially magical time to visit. Savannah is a city of more than 100 diverse and distinct neighborhoods. The city also offers easy access to the coastal islands, such as Tybee Island, home to the Tybee Island Light Station, which is the oldest lighthouse on the southern Atlantic coast. The Riverfront area is another popular tourist destination in Savannah, with lots of things to do and see. The city also has a rich cultural and performing arts scene, along with fine dining in restaurants located along the waterfront and in the historic downtown area. Other attractions in Savannah include several historic cemeteries, Fort Jackson and the Fort Pulaski National Monument.

Southeast Georgia has a humid subtropical climate. Summers are hot, except for the coastal areas, which are moderated by ocean breezes. Winters are mild and short (December-January) with daytime highs in the 50s inland, to 60s and 70s along the coast and extreme south. Snow is a very rare occurrence in southeast Georgia. Spring comes early and is mild. Autumn has very pleasant temperatures, but is hurricane season. Even inland areas in southeast Georgia are vulnerable to tropical storms and hurricanes, but plenty of warning is generally given for these storms. Frequent daytime thunderstorms are possible in spring and summer.
