Toccoa
is in northeast Georgia about 50 miles from Athens and 90 miles northeast of Atlanta. As of the 2000 census, the population was 9,323. Toccoa offers a multitude of things to see and do. Main Street has specialty shops, art galleries, antique stores, and restaurants. Toccoa has several museums, the most popular of which is the Currahee Military Museum. Housed in the historic train depot, this museum features an exhibit of World War II memorabilia. Included in the display is an exhibit of 506 Easy Company, a WWII paratrooper division that was popularized by Stephen Ambrose's book "Band of Brothers," the HBO Miniseries "Band of Brothers," and the movie "Saving Private Ryan." Approximately one-sixth of Stephens County, of which Toccoa is part of, is covered with national forest and wildlife. Nearby Hartwell Lake offers fishing, boating, water-skiing, swimming and other water sports. Several hiking trails are in the area, from easy to challenging. The Broad River trail is one of the more popular, where a beautiful waterfall greets hikers within the first mile, and a series of smaller cascades follow. Camping is available in both the Chattahoochee National Forest and the Russell Wildlife Area. Lake Yonah is a 320-acre lake that also offers boating, swimming, canoeing and kayaking. The U.S. Forest Service maintains several bicycling trails in Stephens County, also, including the multi-use Frady Brancy Trail System. The terrain has lots of short climbs and fast descents, stream crossings, waterfalls and rock overhangs.
