Martin
is a tiny town located in Franklin and Stephens County in northeast Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the population of Martin was 311 residents. Nestled in the foothills of northeast Georgia, Martin is the perfect base town for those visiting nearby Lake Hartwell. Other attractions in the area include Tugaloo State Park. Situated on a wooded peninsula, Tugaloo is surrounded by the beauty of the 55,900-acre Lake Hartwell. Activities in the park include swimming, sailing, boating, wind surfing, fishing and camping. Hiking trail winds through oak, walnut, mulberry and cherry trees. The word "Tugaloo" is an Indian name for the river which once flowed freely before to the construction of Hartwell Dam. Victoria Bryant State Park is also near the town of Lavonia. This state park offers a golf course with clubhouse, two ponds for fishing, picnicking along a stream and hiking trails through the woods. A nature center, 3 playgrounds, a swimming pool and camping is also available at Victoria Bryant. Northeast Georgia has a four-season climate that is greatly influenced by the Appalachian Mountains. The climate here differs significantly from the rest of the state. Summers are warm and typically has lengthy spells of hot, humid weather. Spring and fall are mild with much variability from day to day. The first freeze is usually in October in the mountains. Winter temperatures average in the 40s during the day and 20s at night. Snow is light, with about 4 to 6 inches each year. Annual average rainfall in this region is over 60 inches. The driest months are September and October. The wettest month is March. Thunderstorms are common in spring and summer.
