Hartwell
is a small city located in Hart County in northeast Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the population was 4,188 residents. The community of Hartwell sits on the southern border of Lake Hartwell. The lake got its name from the city, which got its name from the American Revolutionary War hero, Nancy Hart. The town and lake are about an hour and a half north of Atlanta. Hartwell Lake is a reservoir created by the Hartwell Dam on the Savannah, Tugaloo and Seneca Rivers. Hartwell Lake has more than 80 public park sites, five marinas, picnicking facilities and camping. The northern part of the lake extends into the beautiful foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Hartwell Lake comprises almost 56,000 acres of water and has a shoreline of 962 miles. There is a wide difference in soils, terrain and climate surrounding Hartwell Lake, which results in a very diverse wildlife habitat. More than 250 species of birds can be found here, along with 40 species of mammals and numerous aquatic, reptilian and amphibian species. Some of the recreational activities at the lake include hiking, mountain biking, golf, fishing, boating and other water sports, birdwatching and photography. East of lake are rolling hills and farmland. To the north/northwest are lakes, rivers and lovely country roads to explore. The area around Hartwell is full of historic sites and festivals, including an Antique Boat Festival and the Spring Fever Regatta.

Northeast Georgia has a four-season climate that is greatly influenced by the Appalachian Mountains. The climate here differs significantly from the rest of the state. Summers are warm and typically has lengthy spells of hot, humid weather. Spring and fall are mild with much variability from day to day. The first freeze is usually in October in the mountains. Winter temperatures average in the 40s during the day and 20s at night. Snow is light, with about 4 to 6 inches each year. Annual average rainfall in this region is over 60 inches. The driest months are September and October. The wettest month is March. Thunderstorms are common in spring and summer.
