Gray
is a charming, small town located in Jones County in central Georgia. The population as of the 2000 census was 1,811 residents. Don't let the small size of the town fool you, though, as there are dozens of things to see and do around Gray. It's a tranquil, charming town just one hour from the city of Atlanta and 15 minutes from Macon. The town of Gray, and surrounding Jones County is filled with abundant wildlife and recreational activities, historical sites and beautiful scenery. Fishing is excellent at Lucas Lake, Miller Lake Recreation Area and Hillsboro Lake. In addition, Lake Sinclair, Lake Oconee and Lake Juliette are all within an hour's drive of Gray. The Ocmulgee River and several other streams and creeks in the area offer swimming, canoeing, camping and picnicking. History buffs will love Gray. The Jarrell Plantation is a state historic site that is an original middle Georgia plantation that consists of 20 buildings dating between 1847 and 1945. On site is and 1847 plantation-style house, a mill complex, carpenter shop, blacksmith shop and one of the largest collections of artifacts in Georgia. Nearby is the Old Clinton Historical District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Central Georgia has a humid, subtropical climate. Summer temperatures are warm and often muggy and winters are cold with lows in the mid-30s. Precipitation per year is on average between 45-47 inches. Spring is mild and autumn in central Georgia is sunny and cool and the driest time of the year. The first freeze of the year normally falls within November, however, winters are short in Georgia (typically December and January are the coldest months.)
Snow may occur in winter, but freezing rain and ice are a much bigger problem. Frequency and amount of snow increases the further north you go in the state. Tornadoes are possible, and central Georgia is in what is called "Dixie Alley," which is known for strong, long running tornadoes.
