Fort-Valley
is the county seat of Peach County in central Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the population was 8,005 residents. Fort Valley is home to Fort Valley State University, a Historically Black College and University. In many ways, Fort Valley is the quintessential southern town, filled with colorful gardens and southern charm. One of the finest collections of camellias can be found at the nine-acre Massee Lane, which is the historic home of the American Camellia Society. It's located just five miles south of Fort Valley on Highway 49. One of the best times to visit is in February, when the Festival of Camellias continues throughout the whole month. The camellias generally begin to bloom in October and continue through March. Other attractions in Fort Valley include the Abendroth Japanese Garden and the Scheibert Rose Garden. Plantings of daffodils, azaleas, daylilies and several varieties of flowers and flowering trees add to the beauty of the town year-round. Fort Valley is home to the Lane Packing Company. Founded in 1908, it has grown from a small country fruit-packing shed to a large entertainment and shopping complex. It features a roadside market, the Just Peachy Gift Shop and Peachtree Café. Tours are available for the orchard, the packing line and the strawberry fields. Guided tours are on a tram ride through the peach and pecan orchards, and free self-guided tours of the plant are also available.

South-central Georgia has a humid, subtropical climate. Summers are warm and muggy, and winters are mild. Winter in southern Georgia, which lasts from December through January, is much warmer than the northern mountain areas. Winter storms, such as blizzards, are rare. The last blizzard the state had was in March 1993. Tornadoes are possible, and central Georgia is in what is called "Dixie Alley," which is known for strong, long running tornadoes. Spring and autumn are both mild, although autumn is drier. Thunderstorms are possible anytime of the year, but more common in spring and summer.
