Brunswick
is located in southeastern Georgia on a harbor along the Atlantic Ocean. It's only 30 miles north of Florida. As of 2008, the city had a population of 16,269, but the surrounding metropolitan area's population totals 103,841. The Port of Brunswick is the fourth-largest automobile port in the eastern U.S., and the city is the center of Georgia's shrimp and crab industry. However, tourism is the city's largest industry. Brunswick is considered the gateway to Jekyll Island and St. Simons Island, both barrier islands that are accessible only by causeways from the city. The islands, called the "Golden Isles," feature stunning white-sand beaches and are popular tourist destinations. There are 3 golf courses just north of Brunswick. Combined with the courses on Jekyll Island, St. Simons Island, and Sea Island, there are a total of 252 holes of golf in the area. Sea Island was ranked the number one golf resort in North America by Golf Digest. The Golden Isles Speedway is located about 20 miles west of Brunswick, and the area is home to two out of three publicly accessible beaches in the state. The city of Brunswick is home to several art galleries, and the Ritz Theatre, built in 1898, is host to several cultural events throughout the year. The historic theater was originally the Grand Opera House, and later served as a theatre for vaudeville. In the 1930s, it was converted to a movie palace.

Southeastern Coastal Georgia is classified as humid subtropical with hot, humid summers and cool winters. Due to the proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, this region rarely experiences extreme temperatures, such as those further inland. Summers tend to be hot with frequent thunderstorms. Almost half of the precipitation occurs from June through September. The coast experiences a monsoon-type climate in the summertime. This area rarely receives snowfall, although it does experience occasional Arctic cold fronts in the winter that can push the temperatures down into the 20s. It rarely gets colder than that, however. The south-coastal region is at risk for hurricanes, although they aren't frequent and residents usually have plenty of warning.
