St-Marys is a city in the southeast corner of Georgia, which serves as the gateway to Cumberland Island National Seashore. The population of the city was 13,761 as of the 2000 census. Cumberland Island is the largest of Georgia's barrier islands. Boat access to the island and the island's visitor center are both located on the St. Marys historic waterfront. A little known fact about St. Marys is that it's the second oldest continuously inhabited city in the U.S., second only to St. Augustine, Florida. The city was first settled in the mid-1500s by the Spanish, established as a town in 1792 and incorporated in 1802. St. Marys sits along the St. Marys River and charms visitors with its Victorian architecture, white picket fences, quaint shops and restaurants and lush trees and gardens. The city is host to the annual Rock Shrimp Festival and the St. Marys Submarine Museum. Just minutes from St. Marys, a ride on the ferry takes you to enchanting Cumberland Island National Seashore. The travel channel has called the island "America's Most Beautiful Wilderness Beach." Cumberland Island is 17.5 miles long and totals 36,415 acres. Of that, 16,850 are marsh, mud flats, and tidal creeks. The island is rich with natural resources and wildlife, such as sea turtles, wild horses, armadillos, sand dunes, maritime forests, and salt marshes. The historic significance of Cumberland Island is well documented and it's the site of numerous archeological studies. Tours of the area include narrated tram tours of Historic St. Marys. Recreational activities include swimming, fishing, boating, golf, shelling, hiking, birding and so much more.

Northeastern Florida, along the Atlantic coast near the Georgia border, enjoys a year round mild climate. Hot, humid summers and warm, mild winters attract lots of visitors to this area in all four seasons of the year. Florida, as a whole, has three basic climatic zones that are classified as "hot-humid." Northern Florida, in the Jacksonville-Amelia Island region is somewhat cooler than the southern part of the state due to its latitude, prevailing northeasterly winds and the cooling breezes from the Atlantic Ocean. It can rain anytime of the year in northeastern Florida, but the official "rainy" season runs from May through October, with September being the wettest month of the year. Winters are sunny and mild, with cool evenings.
