Thomasville
is the second largest city in southwest Georgia, following Albany. It's located in Thomas County, near the Florida border and has a population of about 20,000. The city calls itself the "City of Roses," and maintains more than 7,000 rose bushes throughout the city. In addition, many residents also grow roses in their own personal gardens. An annual Rose Festival is held during the last week of April in Thomasville, and draws people from all over the world. Activities during the festival include parades, rose displays and juried shows, street dances, an arts and crafts fair, garden tours and lectures, food vendors, historic home and museum tours. Thomasville is home to Jack Hadley's Black History Museum, the Thomasville Cultural Center and the Thomas County Historical Society & Museum. Other attractions include a large farmer's market, plantations that are open to the public and a charming downtown shopping area. More than a hundred years ago, Thomasville was one of the most popular places in the country for wealthy socialites to spend their winters. Many made it their winter home and built "grand winter cottages" here. More than 50 of these "cottages" still exist in Thomasville today. In addition, many downtown Victorian buildings have been maintained, and along with the brick-paved streets, they evoke the feeling of a bygone era that's very appealing. It's little wonder why this rose-filled, charming town has been a favorite of tourists for over a century.

The Panhandle Region known as the "Big Bend" is near the Georgia State line to the north and the Gulf of Mexico to the south. This region enjoys a somewhat cooler climate in the wintertime than the southern part of the state, due to its latitude and cold winds from the north. However, daytime temperatures in winter are still generally warm enough for outdoor activities, with chilly nights. Summers are hot and humid, due to its' proximity to the Gulf and frequent thundershowers. The Panhandle region receives the most rain of any area in the state of Florida, with nearly 60 inches per year. June through September are the wettest months. Hurricane season officially lasts from August through late October, but ample warning is given for these types of storms.
