Quitman is a beautiful little town in Brooks County, southern Georgia near the Florida border. As of the 2000 census, the population was 4,638 residents. Quitman was the home of author James Pierpont, who wrote the famous winter holiday tune "Jingle Bells." Often called the "Camelia City" for the profusion of the trees that grow in the area, Quitman is conveniently located near both Interstate 75 and Interstate 10, with easy access to both the east and west coasts of Florida. The streets of Quitman are lined with large old trees and wood frame homes from various periods of history. The streets of the town are laid out in a grid with several central city parks. The Quitman Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and contains late 19th and early 20th century brick buildings. Quitman, Georgia is more than a stop along the way to Florida; it's a lovely place to stay awhile and enjoy the hospitality of the south. Quitman Weather & Climate

The Panhandle Region known as the "Big Bend" is near the Georgia State line to the north and the Gulf of Mexico to the south. This region enjoys a somewhat cooler climate in the wintertime than the southern part of the state, due to its latitude and cold winds from the north. However, daytime temperatures in winter are still generally warm enough for outdoor activities, with chilly nights. Summers are hot and humid, due to its' proximity to the Gulf and frequent thundershowers. The Panhandle region receives the most rain of any area in the state of Florida, with nearly 60 inches per year. June through September are the wettest months. Hurricane season officially lasts from August through late October, but ample warning is given for these types of storms.
