Lake-Oconee is located in central Georgia near the towns of Greensboro and Eatonton. It's the fourth largest lake in the state and is situated in Georgia's Greene, Morgan and Putnam Counties. Lake Oconee is separated from its sister lake, Lake Sinclair, by Wallace Dam. Lake Oconee is well-known for its' seven world-class golf courses, including the Golf Club at Cuscowilla, which was ranked in the top 3 "Best Residential Courses" by Golfweek Magazine in 2002. In 2009, Golfweek listed Lake Oconee's Harbor Club as on of the "top 10 places to play in Georgia." The lake also offers excellent fishing, swimming, boating, water-skiing, wakeboarding, hiking, camping, picnicking. Birdwatching is also quite popular at Lake Oconee, where hummingbirds, ospreys, eagles, woodpeckers, and other birds are spotted frequently. The communities surrounding Lake Oconee have streets lined with Victorian and Antebellum homes. You'll find shops and boutiques filled with unique fashion, jewelry, antiques and specialty gifts. Driving and walking tours are available in Greensboro's historic district, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The town of Eatonton is located in the midst of the Antebellum Trail, which features some of the finest old homes in the South. Other attractions near Lake Oconee include the Uncle Remus Museum and Oconee National Forest, which contains The Rock Eagle Effigy, which is over 6,000 years old.

Lake Oconee Weather & Climate

Central Georgia has a humid, subtropical climate. Summer temperatures are warm and muggy and winters are cold with lows in the mid-30s. Precipitation per year is on average between 45-47 inches. Spring is mild and autumn in central Georgia is sunny and cool and the driest time of the year. The first freeze of the year normally falls within November. Winters are short (typically December and January are the coldest months.) Snow may occur in winter, but freezing rain and ice are more of a problem. Frequency and amount of snow increases the further north you go in the state. Tornadoes are possible, and central Georgia is in what is called "Dixie Alley," which is known for strong, long running tornadoes.
