West-Point-Lake is a man-made lake formed by the damming of the Chattahoochee River along the Georgia-Alabama state line. The reservoir has 525 miles of shoreline, and helps control seasonal flooding and provides hydroelectric power. West Point Lake helps maintain the water level in the navigable inland waterway from Columbus, Georgia to the Gulf of Mexico along the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint Waterway. It does this by storing water during rainy periods, to be released later during dry periods. West Point Lake is also used as a recreational lake for fishing, boating, camping and other activities. Located near Pine Mountain and Callaway Gardens, West Point Lake offers 25 day-use parks for public use. Fishing is probably the most popular activity at the lake. The lake abounds with bass, catfish, crappie and bream. Bank fishing is excellent at many locations, and there are public fishing piers at Hardley Creek Park, Rocky Point Park, and McGee Bridge Park. All of the piers at West Point Lake provide access for those with disabilities. Boat launching ramps are located at 34 public areas around the lake. Some charge a small boat launch fee. Two privately owned marinas provide fuel, supplies, rentals, etc. In addition to fishing, West Point Lake has tennis courts, basketball courts, picnicking facilities, and three public swimming beaches. Plus, there are four county parks and municipal parks located along West Point Lake, providing plenty of space for a day hike, picnic, birdwatching or wildlife viewing.
