Lake-Seminole
is a 37,500-acre reservoir located along the southwestern border of Georgia. It's one of the "Great Lakes of Georgia," known for its' bass fishing and bird watching. The Chattahoochee and Flint Rivers converge in the lake, before flowing over the Jim Woodruff Lock and Dam, as the Apalachicola River. Lake Seminole contains 37,500 acres of water 376 miles of shoreline. The lake has a gorgeous setting among hardwood and pine forests, cypress ponds and rugged ravines. In other areas, tall grasses and wetlands reminds one of the Florida Everglades. Aside from fishing and birdwatching, other recreational activities at Lake Seminole include boating, waterskiing, tubing, swimming and camping. Picnic shelters, campsites and cottages sit along the water's edge, encouraging visitors to enjoy the tranquility of the lake. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers maintains 35 parks at Lake Seminole, with ten of them located along the shore of the lake. Five campgrounds are also here, and other nearby parks include Seminole State Park and Three Rivers State Park. A historical point of interest at Lake Seminole is the Spanish mission San Carlos de los Chacatos, which was established in 1674. The mission was used by both Marcos Degado and Don Laureano de Torres y Ayala on their expeditions. It was discovered in 1948 during an archaeological dig by the Florida Park Services during construction of Lake Seminole. Hiking trails in the area include a wetlands boardwalk that leads past gopher tortoise burrows and one of the largest Longleaf Pine forests in the state.

The Panhandle Region known as the "Big Bend" is near the Georgia State line to the north and the Gulf of Mexico to the south. This region enjoys a somewhat cooler climate in the wintertime than the southern part of the state, due to its latitude and cold winds from the north. However, daytime temperatures in winter are still generally warm enough for outdoor activities, with chilly nights. Summers are hot and humid, due to its' proximity to the Gulf and frequent thundershowers. The Panhandle region receives the most rain of any area in the state of Florida, with nearly 60 inches per year. June through September are the wettest months. Hurricane season officially lasts from August through late October, but ample warning is given for these types of storms.
