Lake-Blackshear is a man-made lake located on the Flint River in southwestern Georgia. It's located near the unincorporated community of Cobb, home to the largest pecan orchard in the world. Lake Blackshear was created by a dam that was constructed in the late 1920s. Georgia Veterans State Park is located on the east side of the lake, and the park is home to the Lake Blackshear Resort & Golf Club. Lake Blackshear is about 20 miles long and varies in width, with the widest part being no more than one mile wide. An interesting note about the lake: when the dam was constructed, little effort was made to cut down the trees that would soon be underwater. It was thought that the trees would soon die and decompose once submerged. This was true for many of the trees, however, there are still many living Cypress trees right in the middle of the lake and some dead trees that have not fallen down. Activities at Lake Blackshear include fishing, swimming, boating, hiking, and golf. The Denis Griffiths golf course was listed on Golf Digest's list of four-star-rated courses. The course is open daily from 8:00am until dusk. Nearby Georgia Veterans State Park covers 1,308 acres and features a museum with aircraft, vehicles, weapons and other memorabilia dating from the Revolutionary War to the present. Lake Blackshear is about a two-hour drive from Atlanta.

Lake Blackshear Weather & Climate

Southwest Georgia has a humid, subtropical climate, similar to that of northern Florida. There is a rainy season, June through September. Summers are hot and humid with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Winter are mild and somewhat drier and lasts from December through January. Daytime temps in the winter range from 50 to 70 degrees F. in the extreme south. Snow is almost unheard of in southwestern Georgia, but it does fall on rare occasions. Extreme weather is possible in the form of severe thunderstorms, tornadoes and heat waves. Summer temperatures over 100 degrees F. have been recorded in the past. Autumn is mild and the driest part of the year.
