Augusta is the second largest city in Georgia, located along the Savannah River in the northeastern part of the state. It's a consolidated city, also known as Augusta-Richmond County. The city of Augusta and the county of Richmond merged in 1996 and the entire metropolitan area has a population of approximately 540,000. The city of Augusta is well known around the world for hosting the Masters golf tournament each year. The city's location, about halfway up the Savannah River is on the fall line, which creates a series of small waterfalls along the river. Very scenic and it marks the end of a navigable waterway for the river and the entry to the Georgia Piedmont area. Augusta is near Lake Strom Thurmond, which provides year round recreational opportunities. The Augusta National Golf Club hosts the first major golf tournament of each year - The Masters. This is one of the most prestigious of all tournaments and one of four major championships. It's held the first week of April annually and draws golfers from all around the world. The Augusta National Golf Club was ranked "3rd best course in the world" by Golf Magazine in 2009. The Augusta Top Gun Series (disc golf) is also held each year at various venues in Augusta. Another popular Augusta event is the World's Richest Drag Boat Race (the Augusta Southern Nationals,) held on the Savannah River. This event benefits the Augusta Chapter of the Georgia Special Olympics, with over 100 teams from 25 states competing.

Augusta Weather & Climate

East central Georgia, along the coast, has a humid subtropical climate with mild winters and hot, humid summers. In winter, snow flurries are an occasional sight, although the area does not get as much snowfall as Atlanta. This region, near the city of Augusta, is lower in elevation, near the coast, which is largely the reason for less snowfall. Freezing rain is a threat in the wintertime, however. The average high temperature in winter is 58 and the average low is 34. Summer daytime temperatures are often in the 90s and can soar as high as 100 or above.
